MT. VERNON – A bona fide doubt has been raised regarding a 32-year-old Mt. Vernon man’s fitness to stand trial on charges accusing him of fatally running over a young woman last month.
Mitchell Sharp remains in the Jefferson County Jail since his arrest last month following a crash in Mt. Vernon that claimed the life of 18-year-old Courtney Estes, who was a pedestrian.
Sharp reportedly fled on foot from the crash scene and was not wearing clothes at the time.
The doubt surrounding his mental fitness was raised in court earlier this month and a fitness evaluation was ordered. It’s unclear at this time what the results were of that evaluation, as the report has been ordered sealed pending a Sept. 12 status hearing.
Sharp is charged with Class 1 felony Failure to Report a Crash Involving a Death, Class 3 felony Reckless Homicide, and Misdemeanor Driving while License Suspended.
He appeared in Jefferson County Court Thursday for a preliminary hearing where a bill of indictment was filed in the case.
