MT. VERNON – Local law enforcement reported two separate incidents Friday morning involving juveniles and possible firearms.
According to the Mt. Vernon Police Department, around 8:34 Friday morning, a Jefferson County School Resource Officer at Casey Junior High received a report of a juvenile with a firearm in the area of Farmhouse Bakery, across from Casey Junior High.
The School Resource Officer notified Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department Dispatch. According to Mt. Vernon Police, all available Mt. Vernon Police and Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department units responded to the area.
Reportedly, law enforcement was unable to make contact with the juvenile at the bakery or in the area, but schools in the area were notified of the potential threat so they could follow their safety procedures.
The investigation revealed the juvenile may be located at a home in the Summersville area, where officers ultimately located the 14-year-old male and took him into custody on a preliminary charge of Theft of a Firearm.
This is an ongoing investigation.
Police say the juvenile did not make any known threats towards any school or students at the school.
Then around 10:25 Friday morning, the Oakland Education Center at 716 Casey reported a student attempted to enter the facility but activated a metal detector.
When questioned, the student allegedly reported he had a gun. The student was moved out of the building and a lock down began.
