JEFFERSON COUNTY – One person was killed in a crash involving a vehicle and a horse drawn buggy in Jefferson County Monday afternoon.
The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office says deputies along with the Jefferson County Fire Protection District and Litton Ambulance responded to the crash around 4:50 p.m. on Log Cabin Lane and Goshen Road.
A white Dodge van, driven by 32-year-old Katlyn M. Catron of Ina, struck the horse drawn buggy, driven by 20-year-old Dena M. Mast of Belle Rive, from behind, causing major damage and seriously injuring Dena and her two passengers,18-year-old Elma Mast and 21-year-old Mary M. Mast of Belle Rive.
Elma Mast was rushed to SSM Good Samaritan Hospital by Litton Ambulance but was pronounced dead shortly after arriving. Mary and Dena Mast were flown to a hospital in St. Louis for treatment of their injuries. Catron and her juvenile passenger were not seriously injured in the crash.
Family of the Masts arrived on scene to assist with recovery and treatment of the horse, which was also injured during the crash.
Sheriff’s detectives responded to assist with the crash investigation. The circumstances are still being investigated.
