METROPOLIS – Two people were arrested Friday on various charges following a pursuit with Metropolis Police.

Police say 30-year-old Austin C. Burnham of Metropolis was charged with two Massac County warrants – one for Theft and the other for Failure to Appear-Violation of an Order of Protection, and Resisting/Obstructing Arrest.

Thirty-two-year-old Chelsea B. Emery of Henderson, Kentucky, was charged with Fleeing/Attempting to Elude Police, Reckless Driving, Concealing or Aiding a Fugitive, and numerous traffic violations. She was released on a notice to appear

Police saw while on patrol Burnham in a vehicle parked at the Marathon Station on 12th Street and Coburn. The officer tapped on the window and told Burnham to get out of the vehicle due to warrants issued for him. He rolled up the window, and the driver took off at a high rate of speed, squealing tires and crossed 12th Street without yielding and causing numerous vehicle to brake hard to avoid a collision. A pursuit ensued.

The driver, later identified as Emery, made numerous traffic violations and ended up going west on Catherine Street at Metropolis Elementary School which is a one-way eastbound. There were students present and outside playing at the playground. She stopped near 11th Street where Burnham fled on foot. Burnham was captured a few blocks later.
